ONE OF THE BIBLE’S DIRTY WORDS

Unwrapping God's Gift of Identity:
Session 11: The Gift of Submission
Ephesians 5:21; 6:1-9; 5:22-24

There are some passages in the Bible that you just don’t want to teach. Pulling teeth from a rabid Rottweiler in labor on a hot summer’s day in Arizona during a sandstorm would be preferable to dealing with some the negative reactions that certain parts of God’s Word can produce.
     But it IS God’s Word.
Such is the burden of systematic  Bible study.  When teaching topically, one can pick and choose the verses that apply to the topic and tap dance around the nasty parts that some people don’t like. (After all we wouldn’t want to     offend anybody, would we?)
But when one, like myself, teaches verse-by-verse, one can’t help crashing head on into controversial passages. (So maybe we would want to offend some people, after all.)
ALL Scripture is inspired, even the parts we don’t like. And so we will study it, whether you like it or not. And there won’t be any tap dancing.
(Okay maybe a little tap dancing.)
This week’s lesson deals with six groups of people who are all told to the same thing (but in different ways).
There are some in the first group who don’t like having to do this thing, period, end of story.
There are many in the second group who like to remind the first group of what is to be done, while not doing it themselves.
I am going to separate these two troublemakers by putting the first group in the back of the class, and sending the second group to the principal’s office until next week.
Hopefully that way we will be able to aviod some problems. Enjoy.

Please pray before you begin.

Opening Discussion

-Describe a negative experience being under another’s authority affect.
-Describe a positive experience.

Read

Here is the passage we will be studying this week.
If you can, read Ephesians 1-4; 5:1-21 first.
Please pray before you begin.

Ephesians 5:21; 6:1-9; 5:22-24 (The Message)

5:21 Out of respect for Christ, be courteously reverent to one another.

6:1 Children, do what your parents tell you. This is only right.

6:2 "Honor your father and mother" is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it,

6:3 namely, "so you will live well and have a long life."

6:4 Fathers, don't exasperate your children by coming down hard on them. Take them by the hand and lead them in the way of the Master.

6:5 Servants, respectfully obey your earthly masters but always with an eye to obeying the real master, Christ.

6:6 Don't just do what you have to do to get by, but work heartily, as Christ's servants doing what God wants you to do.

6:7 And work with a smile on your face, always keeping in mind that no matter who happens to be giving the orders, you're really serving God.

6:8 Good work will get you good pay from the Master, regardless of whether you are slave or free.

6:9 Masters, it's the same with you. No abuse, please, and no threats. You and your servants are both under the same Master in heaven. He makes no distinction between you and them.

5:22 Wives, understand and support your husbands in ways that show your support for Christ.

5:23 The husband provides leadership to his wife the way Christ does to his church, not by domineering but by cherishing.

5:24 So just as the church submits to Christ as he exercises such leadership, wives should likewise submit to their husbands.

Study

Ephesians 5:21; 6:1-9; 5:22-24 (King James Version)

5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

-Who is the author addressing?
-Does he leave anyone out?
-What are his readers to do?
-Define submit?
-Is it a position of power or weakness?
-To whom are they to submit?
-How are they to do it?

6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

-Who does the author address?

-How are they to obey?
-Why?

6:2 Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

6:3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

-What else are they to do?
-Why?
-Define honor.
-How does one honor another?
-What is the promise?
-If their parents are not godly people, should they still submit?

6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

-Who does the author address?
-According to the world, is this a position of submission or authority?
-According to verse 5:21, what are they to do?
-How are they to do it?
-What are they to avoid?
-Define the terms in this verse?
-If their children  are not godly people, should they still submit?

6:5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in
singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

-Who does the author address?

-According to verse 5:21, what are they to do?
-Who are they to obey?
-How are they to obey?
-Define the terms in this verse?
-If their masters are not godly people, should they still submit?

6:6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

6:7 With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:

-What should they avoid doing?
-What should they do instead?
-How are they do it?
-Who are they serving?

6:8 Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.

-What should they know?
-What shall they receive?
-Does this imply a works-based salvation?
-Explain.

6:9 And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

-Who does the author address?
-According to the world, is this a position of submission or authority?
-According to verse 5:21, what are they to do?
-How are they to do it?
-What are they to know?
-Define the terms in this verse?
-If their servants  are not godly people, should they still submit?
-To whom are they truly submitting?
-Can that be said for all the groups?

5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

-According to the world, is this a position of submission or authority?
-According to verse 5:21, what are they to do?
-To whom are they to submit?
-How are they to do it?

5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

5:24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

-Why are they to submit?
-To whom are they truly submitting?
-How is He described?

-His readers?
-His purpose?
-What is submission?
-Are any conditions given under which the readers can refuse to submit?

-Are their any master/servant relationships in our society?
-What relationships come close?
-Which groups do you fall into?  -How do you respond to authority?
-Do you have trouble submitting to others?
-Do you have trouble submitting to Christ?

Commentary from Last Week
Remember that this commentary is optional!

Let No One Deceive You

People say things that aren't true.
They say things that sound really good, but mean nothing.
We have the ability to decide to listen them or not.

How do we know whether they are lying or not?

We hold what they say to what the Bible says.

Because of These Things

Referring to the things in verse 5:5
Impurity, covetousness and idolatry

The Wrath of God

The things of God are black and white.
There are no gray areas or loopholes in His ways.

God is perfect love and perfect justice.

Those who accept and follow Him will be seperated from His justice and will be eternally the object of His love.
Those who reject God will be seperated from His love and will be eternally the object of His justice.

Partakers

Taking part, participating in the sinful actions of others.

Formerly Darkness

Christ is about transforming lives.
Continuing in our old ways shows no transformation.

Light in the Lord

Light can be seen.
So should Christ be seen in our lives and our decisions and actions.
Christ exemplified goodness, righteousness and truth.

Trying to Learn

The Christ-walk is not a passive one.
Walking is an activity.
Learning is an activity as well.
It's a process that takes concious effort.

Pleasing to the Lord

How do we learn what pleases the Lord.

God tells us what pleases Him through His scripture.
We read and study His word.
We fellowship with others who know Him.
We let the Holy Spirit and fellow children of God speak into our lives.

Do Not Participate

By knowing God's Word and being trained by the church, we can know what behaviors are not acceptable.

Fruitful/Unfruitful Deeds

Physically, fruit is the proper product of healthy plants.
Symbolically, fruit is the desired result of our thoughts and actions.
Spiritually, only healthy deeds and decisions produce fruit.

Our goal should be to glorify God by loving and serving others.
We should have a heart to see all people find salvation through Christ.

Expose

Light exposes things that are in darkness.
Don't take this verse as an excuse to point out and judge the actions of others.

Remember we are walking in the light of the Lord.
If we are walking properly in it, His light will expose dark deeds by comparison.
If we are not walking in his life, we blend in to the darkness.

All Things Become Visible

Eventually, when Christ returns, no one will be able to hide their evil actions anymore.

Awake, Sleeper

People (for the most part) sleep when it is dark.
Without Christ, we were spiriually dead.
Our life was a shadow, an illusion, a dream.
Now, in Christ, the sun (the Son) has risen we are awake and alive.

Be Careful

Walk with care.
Stay in the light.
Stay out of the darkness.
If you find yourself in darkness, go back to the light.

Unwise/Wise

The saying goes, "Knowledge is power."
Knowledge is not power.
Wisdom is power.
Knowledge is information.
Widom is knowing how to use the information we have.
Many people "know" things, but don't know what to do with it.

Making the Most of/Redeeming the Time

Redeem means "to buy back".

Outside of Christ, our lives have no meaning.
God can use the sinful deeds of the lost for His benefit.
Those deeds have no power to save a person from Hell.

But Christ paid the price for us.
He redeemed us.
He bought us. (1 Corinthians 7:23)
Christ gives new worth to our worthless lives.
We can use our sinful past to show our new lives.

Understand the Will of the Lord

Verse 5:10 says to learn what pleases the Lord.
Learning something is a process
Watch. Learn. Practice.
Correct. Learn. Practice.
Then we have to do it ourselves.
We do it. We think about it. We make mistakes. We do it again.
Eventually we don't need to think.
We do it automatically.
We have learned it.
We understand.

Drunk with Wine/Filled with the Spirit

Paul contrasts being filled with Spirit with getting drunk.
What happens when one gets drunk.

One drinks to increase pleasure or reduce pain in one's lives.
One go to where the alcohol is.
The more one takes in, the more one gives up control of one's life.
One's mind alters.
One's feelings ore overridden.
One's restraints are lessened.
One frequently becomes bold.
One talks differently.
One acts differently.
Often one says and does what one would not normally say and do.
It is called being "under the influence".

Continue this list on your own.
Apply these physical symptoms of drinking to being filled with the Spirit
The difference between the two is that the effects of alcohol are temporary and harmful.

Speaking in Psalms, Hymns, and Songs

This is not saying that we need to be singing all the time.
These musical terms come as direct result of the the Spirit filling us.
With the comparison to drinking wine, I envision an "Irish drinking song":
Times of joy and fellowship without care of the world around us.

There are no strict definitions for these terms, but they are songs that glorify God and build up others.

Making Melody with Your Heart

This singing is not always physical (though it often is).

Giving Thanks For All Things

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says "In every thing give thanks" (KJV)
I have heard teaching about this verse that if we encounter bad circumstances, we can thank God in those situations, but we are not to thank Him for them.

Ephesians 5:20 says otherwise.
This says we are to give thanks for all things.
Not all good things, but all things.

The book of Job, chapters 1 and 2 teach us that our lifes can not be influenced in any way, positively or negatively, without God's permission.

God is on His throne.
He has no intention of getting off of it.

The flood came.
God was in charge.
The Holocaust occurred.
God was still sovereign.
The towers fell.
God allowed it to happen.
Katrina hit.
God is Lord of all.

Thank you God.

The Name of Our Lord

People argue over what the true names of God and Jesus Christ are.
How can we pray, baptize, or thank in his name, if we don't know what it truly is.

A name means more than a person's title.
It is a person's reputaion and authority as well.

Technique Focus #27:
Balance Scripture

Often when we read the Bible we come to passages that, in and of themselves, don’t seem right. However when we hold those verses up against other portions of Scripture, we see that God, through the Holy Spirit, will frequently explain Himself.

Balance Scripture with Scripture.

Tool Focus #14:
Manners and Customs of the Bible

(My list of tools is not yet complete. But I will not add to it during this study. I will merely review the current list. Check our website for more details.)

Learn how people in Bible times lived their lives.
Knowing the cultural background of the Hebrew people can help us understand what certain passages mean.

Mr. Dave's Corner

How do you react when God asks you to do something you don’t want to do?
Do you out and out refuse? Do you get angry with Him? Do you plead and bargain with Him? Or maybe you reluctantly obey?
     How should you react?
Should you just do everything God asks of you without question?
     I don’t think so.
Think about this: why would God ask you to do something that you didn’t want to do?
Is He a cruel tyrant that likes to watch you suffer? Is He a sly manipulator who wants to see how low you will stoop to follow Him? Is He a personal trainer yelling “NO PAIN, NO GAIN!” in your ear.
Or maybe He is a loving father.
Why would a parent ask a child to eat vegetables when what they want is candy? Why would a parent ask a child to clean their room when they would rather be playing video games?
God does not just want us to blindly obey Him. If He did, He could force us to, but He doesn’t.
Our attitude is more important than our actions.
God has given us a choice, and He is willing to wait for us to warm up to His thinking.  He knows that you don’t like certain things He has to say. But He wants you to come willingly.
Through the Holy Spirit, God will gently remind you of His word, show you why His way is best, and bring you into fellowship with other children of God who used to think the way you do.
Tell Him what you struggle with, and let Him guide you to the truth.

“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice-the kind he will accept. When you think of what he has done for you, is this too much to ask? Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is.” (Romans 12:1-2 NLT)
