Most Bible references have a Book name, a chapter number, and verse numbers.
If you have a Bible, look at the table of contents.
The Bible is made up of 66 books divided into 2 groups:
The Old Testament has 39 books and the New Testament has 27 books.
John, Matthew, Ephesians, Genesis and Job are all books.
Find them in the Table of Contents.
Genesis and Job are in the Old Testament, the others are in the New Testament.
Turn to the book of John.
The number before the colon (:) is the chapter number.
Chapter numbers are large bold numbers in the upper left of a block of text in the Bible.
The numbers after the colon are the verse numbers. They are smaller numbers before every few sentences.
John 3:16
This refers to the book of John (or the Gospel of John). The book of John is the 43rd book of the Bible, the fourth book
in the New Testament. This verse is in the third chapter of John.
Chapter 1 of John starts with:
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The first verse of John, chapter 2 says:
John 2:1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there;
John, chapter 3, verse 1 says:
John 3:1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;
Now go down chapter 3 to verse 16 which says:
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not
perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16 is one single verse.
The next reference, Matthew 5:3-11, leads to the book of Matthew, chapter 5, starting at verse 3 and going through verse
11, including all the verses in between.
You will notice in the next reference that there is no colon (:). Ephesians 1 refers to the first chapter of the book
of Ephesians in its entirety.
The next reference starts in the first book of the Bible, Genesis. It starts with chapter 1, verse 1 and includes all
of the verses in the first chapter as well as the first three verses of chapter 2
The final reference refers to the book of Job including all the verses in the first 2 chapters.
