Jewish Holiday: Hanukkah When Judas Maccabee and his rebels successfully
defeated the armies of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, they set out to clean out, purify, and restore the temple which the Greeks
had desecrated with idols. They decided to hold an 8-day celebration of rededication, but they only found enough oil to light
the lamps for one day. Miraculously, the oil lasted for all 8 days of the festival.
Hanukkah, or Chanukah, was then established as an annual celebration. This joyful festival
involving lighting the chanukiah (a menorah with 9 branches instead of 7) each night for eight nights, playing games and giving
gifts. It will be celebrated on December 22-29, 2008 and is mentioned in John 10:22.

Mr. Dave's Corner
My all-time favorite Christmas movie is A Christmas Story with little
Ralphie seeking to be sure he gets his dream present, a Red Ryder BB gun. It’s my favorite
because I see a lot of my own childhood in that movie. Dad’s pride in changing fuses and decorating the tree. Mom’s
inability to eat a warm meal due to serving the rest of the family. The politics of schoolwork, dares, and bullies.
But as I grow older, I realize more and more that not everyone had, or has, a picture postcard holiday season.
To many, Christmas is not time of joy, but a source of sorrow and pain. Images of family warmth and togetherness can
be insulting to the lonely, the widow, the homeless and the abused. If you experience sadness
and depression around the holidays, I pray that you will reach out and let someone know. In Christ, you are never alone, and
He desire to restore you. If you do have family, I pray that you will seek out, lift up, and
include those who do not enjoy this time of year. Christmas is about Christ.
As the world focuses on Him, we should remember to show Him and His love to those around us.
From my family to yours, have a Merry Christmas! -Mr. Dave
