Genesis 3:1-6 (KJV)
1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made.  And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Genesis 3:1 (KJV)
1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made.  And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

I do not believe that Satan came to Eve as a slimly slithering snake but he came as Paul describes him in his letter to the Corinthians.  He beguiled eve through his subtleties for Paul states that it is no marvel for Satan himself is transforms into an angel of light.  I believe that is what we have going on here in verse.

He comes with a non-threatening approach.  We need to understand that Satan does not come and say, “I’m Satan and I’m here to devastate your life.  As he comes to Eve he says, yea hath God said, that you shall not eat of every tree in the garden?

And he said to the woman: Apparently, before the curse pronounced in Genesis 3:14-15, the serpent was different than what we know today as a serpent. This creature didn’t start as a snake as we know it, it became one.

“The creature that tempted Eve became a serpent as a result of God’s judgment on it, and it went slithering away into the bushes to the intense horror of Adam and Eve.”  (Boice)

Demonic spirits evidently have the ability, under certain circumstances, to indwell human or animal bodies (Luke 8:33).  On this occasion, Satan chose to indwell the body of a pre-curse serpent.

He is not questing because he needs and answer to this question.  Jesus did the same thing.  The question is to find out something about the one being questioned.  Jesus ask the women at the well, Where is your husband?  She answered, I Don’t have a husband.”  Jesus answered, you right, you have had five, but the one you are living with now is not your husband.  It's a good thing to be truthful.

When Jesus asks questions, it wasn’t because he needed to have an answer but because he wanted to draw something out of the person.  Here we see Satan doing the same thing.  When Satan comes asking us a question he is setting us up to start us into questioning God.  He’s insinuating some thing or trying to get information that can be used against us.  The question gets Eve thinking about the only single thing that she doesn’t have.

Then he leads here to use wisdom that is not godly wisdom.  Think about it, it taste good, it looks good, it will make you wise, what could possible be wrong?  There is one thing that is wrong it is disobedience to God.  This is how he approaches us; he finds something that is on our mind or something that he has set us up to think about.  It could be a weakness or just hitting us until he finds a week spot.  Then he goes to the mind to get us to rationalize.

Genesis 3:2 (KJV)
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

Eve said that, God said we can eat of the garden.
God said much more then that, God said, of every tree you can eat freely.

Genesis 3:3 (KJV)
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Then she said, but the tree in the mist of the garden you shall not eat thereof or touch it.  God didn’t say that.

We always make God’s restrictions worst then it is.  Restrictions were given to protect us.  I told my children; don’t eat the barriers from the holy branches.  The reason I told them is because I love them.

Let’s look at how Eve was deceived and how we and our children become deceived.  Where does it start when we become deceived?
Some say that it started when Eve was talking with the serpent.  Eve should not have been talking with the serpent that day.
Some may say that it began before the talking with the serpent.  It started when Eve was hanging around the tree.  Some may say that Eve was away from her husband, she wasn’t under his subjection, and she was off doing her own thing by herself.

I believe it started before all of these things.  Look at verse 3:3.  shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.  That is not what God said.  Eve added to what God had said.  Eve said that God had said, we shouldn’t eat of the tree or touch it or we shall die.  He didn’t say that.  God did not say, “Don’t touch it.”  So what is wrong with that?  Eve is only adding a rule that makes sense, a rule for protection.

The deception began at the same time that legalisms began.  Eve said I can’t eat that tree and I can’t touch it.  We do not know if Eve added this new rule or if Adam added this rule to drive home and help God concerning Eve.  The rule makes sense, the rule will help God’s word, and the rule will help keep us from falling and sinning.  This is wisdom.  God gave one rule and man multiplied it.

Religious rules and regulations lead to questions and frustration and unbearable chains that lead into deceptions and rebellion.
The religious believe that good rules and regulations will protect us from sin.  It is totally the opposite.  This fact can be verified by reading the four gospels and the words of Jesus to the religious leaders.

Here’s another example.  God wanted to give the nation of Israel a day of rest, a vacation day, a day off to just set back and enjoy.  The religious leaders added rules and regulations to make sure that the people keep their vacation.  Man took it and made it into a day of unbearable rules that would lead to testimony about healing on the Sabbath that would ultimately nail Jesus to the cross.
Rules

--making two loops.  Weaving two threads, undoing two threads;
--tying (a knot) or loosening (it);
--sewing two stitches or tearing in order to sew two stitches;
--writing two letters, erasing in order write two letters;
--building up or tearing down;
--kindling or extinguishing;
--"Bundles which may be lifted with one hand may be moved;
but they may not be moved with two hands.
Bundles of savory, hyssop and thyme may not be used on the Sabbath,
if they were brought in for fuel;
(but if they were prepared) to feed animals,
one may use them on the Sabbath."
And one may pluck (grain) by hand and eat,
but only if one plucks without a utensil;
and one may rub [matal = "husk"] and eat,
but only if he does not rub a lot in a utensil."
--"One may rub with the tips of his fingers and eat,
but only if he does not rub a lot with his hands
in the way he does on a weekday."
(On the Sabbath) one is not to work on an infant or set a fracture.
If one dislocated his hand or foot, he may not pour cold water on it;
but he may wash it in his (usual) way.
And if he is healed, he is healed.
One who has pain in his teeth may not suck vinegar through them (on the Sabbath); but he may taste it in his (usual) way.
And if he is cured, he is cured.
One who has pain in his loins may not pour wine or vinegar (on them on the Sabbath); but he may anoint it with oil---but not with rose oil.
The children of kings may anoint with rose oil,
because their way is to anoint (themselves) with it on a weekday.

Don’t spit on the ground.  Take your false teeth out.

Now we have kids growing up, question the rules, and state that this is stupid, who can do this stupid stuff?   When the children rebel, the religious state that the kids are rebelling against of the religion of their parents.  The kids are rebelling against the same rules that Jesus renounced.

When I was 16 years old, I worked at a lumberyard that had a man there …

We should dress up for Church.  Why?

God didn’t say don’t spit.

What we need to teach our children is what He said, nothing more, and nothing less.

There are 613 commandments in the Old Testament, how can I apply all of those to my life?  In Psalm 15, they are reduced to 11.  Are 11 to many?  How about three.  Go to Micah 6:8.  Still too many?  Matthew 22 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself on these two hangs all the law and the prophets.

Children, here’s all you have to do, love God and love people.

Genesis 3:4 (KJV)
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
In verse 4, he has Eve questioning and now he is contradicting the word of God.

There are millions upon millions upon millions of graves that are proof that Satan was a lyre and that Jehovah Elohim was telling the Gospel truth.  Satan gets us to think that God is being unfair and then leads us into slandering God.

Genesis 3:5 (KJV)
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
You know what, if I had that one thing I think I would be happier, had to be on Eves’ mind at this point or she would not have eaten.  God must be unfair.  God doesn’t want me to eat it, He doesn’t want me to have wisdom, He doesn’t want be to be as wise as he is.  Who does He think He is?  He doesn’t want me to be as a god.

When Satan fell in Isaiah 14 He said he was going to be like the must high God.  Now he is trying to give the same lie to Eve.  You can be as the most high God you will know good from evil.

Pastor Joe Fochos states that, When Satan said, I’ll be like the must high the only one who was like the most high was Adam, he was created in Gods image and likeness, he was the object of God’s affections the angelic realms were there to be ministering sprits to the heirs of salvation to God’s creation, to his sons and daughters.
Then he said that, you will be like God knowing good and evil.
It is sin to exchange the truth of God for the lie (Romans 1:25).

Satan came to Eve as an angel of light, not as a slithering snake on the ground.  The slithering snake on the ground came when the creature was cursed by God in verse aaaa .  Satan came to give his wisdom to Eve, to offer advice to Eve, to lead Eve into a more full life, a life were Eve could have the knowledge of God, to be an equal of God, were Eve could be as a little god herself, a place were she could call the shots, a place were she could know what is right and wrong, a place were she could make the decisions, a place were she could pass the judgments a place were she would be the leader.

All of the tragedy in the world today began by questioning the word of God.  All of the broken families, the drug abuse, the killing, the injustice, the crime, the abused children, all of the tragedy and death that we see today began by questing the Bible.

Genesis 3:6 (KJV)
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Once Satan gets past, the flash and the eye he then gets to the inner man were the desires are.  Once the tree was to be desired, then the heart will make a convert of the mind.  Once the desire gets into the heart, the mind will then rationalize.

God said to man, walk with me, talk with me, receive from me but if you want to you can rebel against me I will provide that option, I will provide to you that choice.  I will provide a choice because with out that choice your love for me would be in question.

Adam did take off the forbidden fruit and nature was changed, sickness and death entered and man was born from that time on with the nature of depravity.

Paul wrote to Timothy; it was the man who knew what he was doing, the woman was deceived, the man made a knowing decision to sin.  Adam decided to sin.  That is why Adam was held responsible.  Eve was truly deceived.

What Eve fell for was “The Lie.”  When Adam choose to go for the same line of reasoning and accepted the “The Lie” his choice was open rebellion.  Adam made a choice, Adam choose to be with Eve on her level rather then to obey God.  I would rather be with the women in a fallen condition then to obey God.  Adam choose to sin, decided to sin.  He looked at the women; he wanted the women and would not allow anything to get in the way between him and the women.  Adam choice shows us that he decided what ever it takes or what ever it means, I am going to disobey God, I am going to turn my back on God that I might continue my relationship with her.

This tragedy continues today with the same results.  If we could know the true cost, when we make a decision to follow a path to reject God,   the cost to start a relationship or to keep a relationship such as Adam did, the cost that we figure this to be will never equal the true cost.

Adam said, I know what I’m doing and because of that, it is Adams sin that is written about in the scriptures that caused the tragedy that is in the world today.

Genesis 3:7 (KJV)
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

There are only two religions; there is the religion of fig leaves and there is the religion of God’s perfect provision through Jesus Christ.

Covering ourselves with our good works is like Adam and Eve trying to cover themselves with fig leaves.

In order for Adam and Eve to be clothed, a sacrifice had to be made.  An animal had to die.  Without shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.  (Hebrews 9:22)
